Hobbit Potato Soup

On September 22 we celebrate Hobbit’s Day! This year we made a creamy potato soup that is soul satisfying, filling enough for Smaug the dragon and precious even if Gollum doesn’t understand.

Slasher Cupcakes – Blood Filled!

These knives were so fun to decorate with! We knew we’d have to do some slasher movies with them. We eventually chose Halloween, but honestly, any slasher movie would work with them. Cherry filling in the center makes them feel extra bloody.

Ripley’s Stuffed Alien Eggs

NOTE: There is a new ALIEN cookbook out as of August 2021. THIS IS NOT THEIR RECIPE! We did ours long before the cookbook came out. Ripley was not a fan of Mother Alien’s eggs and we’re pretty sure they would have tasted nasty too. Fortunately,…

Pet Sematary – Gravestones for Church

Halloween in coming! (Perpetually at our house) So let’s kick off with a simple and fun recipe to make for your next party.

Sweeny Todd: Mrs Lovett’s Meat Pies

Simple and delicious, we kept this simple and paired it with … what else? Gin! We made a sloe gin fizz but a non-alcoholic ginger ale paired well for the non-alcoholic drinkers too. We made crescent dough “fingers” too! Happy Halloween everyone!

Candyman, Candyman, Candyman Beehive Recipe

Candyman is a guilty pleasure of violence and decadent storytelling. The deep layering of urban legend and myth are wound so deeply together, it’s easy to see why this movie has a cult following. We created a cranberry orange bundt cake in a beehive mold. It…

“Tannis” Anise Smoothie – Rosemary’s Baby

No one really knows what Tannis root is, but we made a rhyming association and had fun with flavors. Rosemary’s Baby continues to be one of the best mood films ever made for the horror genre and with this smoothie by our side, we all feel…

Gnarled Fingers – Horror Recipe

Gnarled claws are the perfect addition to any horror movie night watching. Whether you are watching Gretel and Hansel, An American Werewolf in London, or any scary movie, these gnarled fingers or claws, are fun and simple to make. Kids love creating shapes and they can…

Scary Spider Snacks – Eight Legged Freaks

This movie is hilarious and yet still manages to be gross and creepy. We made Scary Spider Snacks to devour during this movie and quite a few other spider movies too. The original title of this film was Arach Attack and features a 16 year old…

Brains and Slime

Huge, exiled, terrorist brains floating around controlling people (and dogs!). There is a little something for everyone in this B movie from 1957. Grab some of our pasta brains and slime ( alfredo sauce w/spinach) and at least your meal will be in good in taste.…

Bloody Nested Rats – Willard

Willard – a long time favorite movie of mine, is ripe with horror tones, scary imagery and really terrible things done by men and animals alike. We made Bloody Nested Rats for this movie! Crispin Glover is one of my favorite actors and the rats made…

Nightmare of the Wolf Honey Cakes – The Witcher Recipe

I knew this would be a tough recipe to get, but I had no idea how tough. The Witcher – Nightmare of the Wolf is a gritty anime that  is supposed to explain how Vesemir (Geralt’s mentor) became the world weary man we know him to…

Fireplace Dust Cups – Don’t be Afraid of the Dark

As featured on Cinema du Fromage, this made for tv movie is a strange one. It’s also fun and really tried to be scary. The movie deals with demons in an old fireplace, family secrets, drugged coffee, and a really bad case of 1970’s women being…

The Witcher – Chicken for the Children

The side quest Empty Coop was a fun little jaunt in the Witcher 3 game where Geralt hunts a monster but discovers the thieves are orphan children. On this week’s podcast, we talked about video games as they work ( or don’t ) in the TV…

Dornish Wine Pears – House of the Dragon Recipe

House of the Dragon’s premier didn’t disappoint. We made Dornish Wine Pears with lots of cinnamon, and rock game hens. Like the pilot, it was delicious and satisfying.

Frank’s Famous Hellraiser Ribs

Explorers in the further regions of experience.   Maybe our ribs aren’t that good, but they are melt off the bone good.  We also made these in a slow cooker which added a deep flavor to the meat that is sometimes lost in other cooking methods.…

Pumpkin Head Recipe – Pumpkin Soup

What is Pumpkin Head? We have no idea, but we love this movie and how gut wrenching and scary it is. Unlike revenge, this is a dish that’s best served hot. Filled with rich, warm spices, cream and chicken stock, it’s a smooth soup that tastes…

Goulash for Ghoulies

I know this isn’t a new recipe and there are many Ghoulie goulash recipes, but I love this dish and Ghoulies is such a fun movie … it just seemed to work. Most of the recipes I see for American goulash are bland and for kid…

Gretel and Hansel Gingerbread Skeletons

This movie made me so happy. Like The Witch this re-imagined fairy tale packs a lot of punch and provides a fabulous women centered story. It’s tense, but unravels masterfully. We made gingerbread skeletons to munch on while we watched, and while we did feel a…

Psycho Goreman – Red Crystals

Psycho Goreman is one of my (new) favorite horror/comedy movies. We’ve watched it over on Shudder ( A subscription service for horror fans that’s WELL worth the cost!)  many times now, and I finally got around to making something I felt was movie worthy. I present:…

The People Under the Stairs – Skull Ring Recipe

Mommy spots everything, doesn’t she? Spenser isn’t from the gas company … because of the skull ring! No self-respecting gas inspector would have one right? All kidding aside, we love the skull reference and made bread in the shape of a skull to eat while we…

Soylent Green Pea Soup w/meaty bits

This movie is more than a dystopian vision of the future and literal nightmare fuel, it’s a grotesque and cynical view of the world. Of course, it’s a classic too. We paired this movie up with a wonderful green pea soup w/meaty bits (Prosciutto on breadsticks)…

Keppler 22-b Beast and Beans

Beast and beans is a Raised by Wolves recipe sure to please. While everything including the food on Keppler 22-b was trying to kill the humans, Campion and Paul seem to have stumbled onto something. Mother of course thinks the beasts are best, and as Tempest…

The Omega Man Twist … and Serum

The Omega Man is a crazy movie about some vampires and a scientist looking for a cure. Science is the enemy! (Wow, this movie has aged well.) We created the Omega symbol and some blood sauce to drip on it. Lots of fun and gross too.

New England Corn Chowder for a New England Fairytale – The Witch

Black Phillip: What… dost thou want? Thomasin: What canst thou give? Black Phillip: Wouldst thou like the taste of butter? A pretty dress? Wouldst thou like to live deliciously? Thomasin: Yes. I think these recipes cover everything but the pretty dress. Chicken Corn Chowder is a great…

Red Hook – Candyman Drink – Non-alcoholic

Nothing says Candyman like a red hook and for a dinner celebrating one of our favorite movies, this drink was a must. We made it with alcohol and then decided to make a non alcoholic version too. (This is the non-alcoholic version) Nothing says love getting…

Red Hook – Candyman drink with alcohol

Nothing says Candyman like a red hook and for a dinner celebrating one of our favorite movies, this drink was a must. We made it with alcohol and then decided to make a non alcoholic version too. Nothing says love getting hooked on all things Candyman.…

Sweets to the Sweet – Candyman Candied Yams

Our honey sweet potato dish is a favorite in many movie menus, but for Candyman, it is perfect.  The recipe uses 5 simple ingredients and pairs perfectly with our City Chicken and Beehive Bunt cake.

City Chicken – The Candyman Setting

This recipe is rumored to have multiple origins but it seems clear that at the heart of it’s creation is a desire to eat something other than chicken, which was considered a “poor man’s” dish. This delicious main course is best  created with some veal, but…

Spaghetti Madness – Hancock Movie Recipe

Spaghetti Madness. While everything else in Hancock's life is a crazy free-for-all, isn't it nice to think about one shining moment of normalcy? Every Thursday, is Spaghetti Madness with the Embrey's but we're guessing it need a little kick to super hero it up. Our recipe…

Mystery Men Meatloaf Recipe

What’s that? You’re angry and need some food now? You’re a working person or heading to the bowling alley and want something delicious? You have forks? This Mystery Men Meatloaf is for you! Really easy, tastier than plain bread crumbs in meatloaf, stuffing makes all the…

Under the Tuscan Sun Chicken

What else would we pair with this delightful movie? I have to admit I wasn’t a fan when I watched it many years ago, but age like fine wine, has a way of mellowing the flavors of life. The book of the same name is fabulous,…

MEET THE CINEMA CHEF!

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Movies Make the Meal. We are absolutely thrilled that you’ve stopped by and we hope you find some useful recipes and movies to watch.

I am Jen, a former film student and a movie aficionado, series freak. writer and podcast host, who loves to share her passion for story through media with the world. I am often joined in the kitchen by my adult children, and some close friends. Our love of creating theme nights, evolved into this site, and it is my honor to share it with you.

I’m not a professional cook, or artist (sorry if that shows!) but I do enjoy cooking and experimenting with flavors. To be be fair, my strength is in the movie to food idea implementation, and in spinning classic dishes with some movie or tv show flare.

Enjoy!
