Babe’s Shepherd’s Pie – Movie Recipe – The Sheep-Pig, also known as Babe: The Gallant Pig, tells the story of a pig raised as livestock who wants to do the work of a sheepdog. Adopted by a border collie, Babe makes his mark in the world by persevering and making a friends.
It’s never the wrong time to watch this movie and we paired it with our delicious (and pig free!) shepherd’s pie to celebrate Babe’s love of corralling sheep!
Babe's Shepherd's Pie - Movie Recipe
Ingredients
- 7 large potatoes (about 2 pounds peeled and cut into fourths)
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup milk + up to 1/2 cup as needed
- 2 tablespoons of course salt
- 1 half onion, finely chopped
- 1 pound of ground beef
- 1 can creamed corn
- 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheese
- 3 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
Instructions
- - In a large pot, cook potatoes until they are soft but not mushy. Drain well and add butter, salt and 1/4 cup of milk. Mash the potatoes with a potato masher and slowly add the rest of the milk until the potatoes and milk are a creamy but not runny consistency. (Add milk slowly to accomplish this.) Use a hand mixer to whip the potatoes if desired.
- - Brown ground beef and drain, Add 3 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce and onions and allow to simmer for 5 minutes.
- - In a casserole dish, layer the dish with ground beef as the base, then add the cheese, the corn and top with the mashed potatoes.
- - Bake at 375 for 30 mins.
Notes
This is one of our favorite comfort food dinners. It's not difficult to make, but it does require a little bit of prep time.
A word on instant mashed potatoes: While it's possible to use them, we don't like the consistency of them when baked and generally like fresh components when we can make them. If you do use them, be sure to use a little extra water or milk to avoid them being dried out when baking.
There are many MANY variations on this recipe, from the inclusion of peas and carrots to a savory gravy being added to the meat.
