Fireplace Dust Cups – Don’t be Afraid of the Dark
As featured on Cinema du Fromage, this made for tv movie is a strange one. It’s also fun and really tried to be scary. The movie deals with demons in an old fireplace, family secrets, drugged coffee, and a really bad case of 1970’s women being declared hysterical.
Remade by Guillermo del Toro in 2010. The 1972 tv movie starring Kim Darby and Jim Hutton is the original.
We made Fireplace Dust Cups to celebrate this film. Enjoy!
Fireplace Dust - Don't be Afraid of the Dark
Ingredients
- 1 box of chocolate pudding
- 2 cups of very cold milk
- 3 Oreo cookies per cup
- Optional
- Gummy worms
- Chocolate syrup
Instructions
- Make the chocolate pudding using the box instructions
- While the pudding is setting in the refrigerator, crush the Oreo cookies by placing them into a large ziploc bag. Be sure you've pressed out all the extra air. Use a rolling pin and crush the cookies in the bag for a 2 mins.
- Dish the pudding into serving bowls or cups and sprinkle the fireplace dust ( Oreos ) on top.
- Garnish if you want with gummy worms or other creature.
- For an added flourish of taste, add a teaspoon of chocolate syrup onto the 'dirt'
Notes
This recipe can be modified with other flavors of pudding, but chocolate gave us the best effect. Dark chocolate Godiva pudding was decadent.
There are lots of other chocolate cookies, but Oreos when crushed with the white middles, made the best "dust" effect.
One note: Serve these cups very cold and allow the pudding to sit in the desired serving container for at least an hour before serving. We didn't add this into the cooking time, but we highly recommend it to be sure the pudding is set and won't liquify at room temperature.
