Psycho Goreman – Red Crystals
Psycho Goreman is one of my (new) favorite horror/comedy movies. We’ve watched it over on Shudder ( A subscription service for horror fans that’s WELL worth the cost!) many times now, and I finally got around to making something I felt was movie worthy. I present: The Red Crystals!
Making this recipe requires a candy thermometer.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup water
- 3/4 cup light corn syrup
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons Cinnamon Oil (or other flavoring)
- 1 teaspoon red gel food coloring
Instructions
- Cover a large cookie sheet with tin foil and spray lightly with non-stick oil
- Add sugar and water together in a large saucepan that has a lid
- Bring the sugar and water mixture to a full boil and then cover for one minute, to trap steam. This will dissolve any crystals on the side of the pan and keep the texture from being grainy. Remove lid.
- Add the corn syrup and let it come to a boil until it reaches 305 degrees - DO NOT STIR This recrystallizes the mixture DO NOT COVER
- Once the mixture is 305 add the flavoring and remove from heat
- Add the red food gel and mix gently to incorporate the color
- Pour the mixture onto your greased cookie sheet and let cool completely at room temperature for at least 1 hour.
- Use a butter knife handle or small food mallet to GENTLY smash the candy into crystal shapes.
Experiment with the flavor levels and the amount of food gel. Use food gel not dye. Dye is not vibrant enough and the colors are often "thin" looking.
Love making this recipe and I use crack candy recipes to coat the rims of glasses for drinks too.
The candy is sharp so be careful!
